• Why I Watermark

I’m Not Sharing So You’ll Like My Work. I’m Sharing Because I want You to Buy My Work Someone on twitter was shocked that I watermarked my work. What was I thinking, they mused publicly, replying to my image. I felt I need to reply as well. I wanted to be prompt and reply quickly and so I did so with a full page (although I could write several). I’ve already edited and expanded things slightly here. I’m sure I’ll update again at some point. Updated 5/7/2019 8:45pm Why do I watermark my photos on social media? Because the internet is dark and full of terrors. But seriously, I watermark…

  • Davenport, Iowa Flooding: A 360 Drone Photo

The photo below is a moveable 360 degree photo – move it with your mouse or finger. When I’m not traveling, I hang my hat with family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For those you who are not aware, in February 2018 I terminated my lease and put 99% of my belongings in storage and dedicated myself to traveling and seeing the world. Anyway, there was flooding in downtown Davenport, Iowa, yesterday, only about 90 minutes from Cedar Rapids and since I’m between trips at the moment I decided to take the drone out and get a couple of shots. This is a 360 photo over downtown. On a computer or…

  • Over Hawaii’s Fissure 8 – a 360 Photo

I visited Hawaii earlier this month and flew the drone over Fissure 8 in Leilani Estates, a subdivision 23 miles south of Hilo which was ground zero to the 2018 Kilauea Volcano eruption. The photo below is a moveable 360 degree photo – move it with your mouse or finger. The Fissure is directly down. While I don’t live in the area, I have a certain affinity for the region as I stayed here with my daughters over Christmas 2014. The eruption destroyed 200 homes in Leilani, including that one. This was shot on 4/7/2019. I’m working on a detailed blog post with a variety of photos and videos of…

  • Austin State Capitol 360 Photo

Shot in October 2015 with special permission from the Texas State Preservation Board (drone flights are not allowed over the Capitol without permission), the 360 image below shows what can be done with a camera drone. Aerial 360 video is also available. This image is low resolution, 6000 pixels wide. On a computer or tablet, you can click on the box on the right side of the image to expand to full screen. To move the photo around use your mouse or finger.

  • Drone vs. DSLR Milky Way Challenge

Nikon D850 vs. DJI Mavic 2 Pro This was a fun experiment and, to be honest, I’m not sure if it’s been done before. I read about photographers capturing the Milky Way with their phones so I wanted to put a drone to the test and see what it could do while hovering. As it turns out you can not only catch the Milky Way’s galactic core but also meteors and satellites as well. The experiment came about as I was on the beach in Eastern Australia. I arrived shortly after midnight with both the Nikon D850 and DJI Mavic 2 Pro in hand. Conditions were not ideal for the…

  • Lighting a Milky Way Scene with a Drone: Abducted By Aliens

Early one morning, while gazing at our amazing Milky Way galaxy, on a beach, on the shore the Tasman Sea in eastern Australia, I was swiftly and briefly beamed up and then returned. It was caught on camera in this epic photo. No, that’s not a drone with a light under it. And no, no alien probes were used during my brief captivity. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.  #aliens #notstaged #beammeup …. Okay, yes, that is that is a drone. This was my first attempt at lighting a scene with a drone. The image was shot with a Nikon D850 on a tripod with a Tamron 15-30mm…

  • The KVUE Interview: A Photographic Nomad

February 2018 was a departure for me in more ways then one. I terminated my lease in Austin, Texas, put his stuff in storage and refocused my life on traveling, with an emphasis on photography. ABC television affiliate, KVUE, in Austin, Texas did a story on my activities which can be viewed below or here. That nomadic photography collection can be found on my Nomadic Favorites gallery. October 2018 marked the 10th month of my nomadic lifestyle. In that time I visited 22 states, including 13 national parks, monuments and recreation areas before I lost count. I’ve popped into Canada and over to Iceland. More travel in 2019 is planned.

  • 5 in a million: Full Strawberry Moon with an Airplane Transit with Saturn in Opposition.

I couldn’t have planned this if I tried. It was a 1 in a million shot as the plane photo bombed the moon. As it was, I guess, it was a 5-in-a-million shot as I was shooting bracketed shots, taking a set of five. I was out having a little fun, shooting the June 27, 2018 Strawberry moon and Saturn in opposition. I didn’t even see the plane transiting the moon as I was shooting. It wasn’t until looking at the camera screen shortly thereafter that I saw it. At first I thought it was a cloud or a bug or something. I shot a bracketed set of 5 images…
